Upcoming Class at the Center

For all of you out there with a new digital camera that you don't know how to use (or if you just need a little help with one you've had forever)-- I'm teaching a three day workshop at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts February 3rd -5th. The three day intensive is my favorite way to teach because you get to take some time out for yourself and just have fun being creative! Here's the link to the information and to sign up:

Lorena & David get married in Sun Valley

Hope everyone had a wonderful New Years! We did-- just sat at home in the hot tub with the kids tucked snuggly in their beds-- it was perfect, especially after a night on the town a couple of days earlier (the Mickey and The Motorcars show at Whiskey's)...

Wanted to share some photos from Lorena and David's weeding. I haven't known them long, but can tell that Lorena and David are going to be super happy together! A pharmicist and a surgeon (who work in the same hospital system in Atlanta), and seem like they should have crossed paths at least a couple of times, Lorena and David actually ended up meeting online. Anyway, they hit it off right away and seem perfect for each other! They were so happy to be getting married in Sun Valley, where David's grandpa built a cabin just north of Chocolate Gulch.

Hope you all had a great holiday! We really had so much fun-- having little kids makes Christmas so exciting! We were also just totally lazy, sitting around and napping all day, which I never do, but was awesome!

It seems like it's baby season again in the valley! I've been doing lots of newborn sessions and Annalee, who you see here, is the latest and cutest. So many new little ones are skinny, but Annalee has the cutest chub-- I love it! Leah is also such a beautiful new mom. I had a great time photographing them!

So fun to have this bus rolling around town with a picture of my little girl on the back! I took this photo of Asha, her cousin Simi and Simi's cousin Ripley at the Arts & Crafts Festival this summer and was delighted when they asked to use it on the back of a bus! Anyway, I also wanted to share some pictures of my girls that I took this fall. As a photographer, I'm pretty bad about taking pictures of my own kids, so I was very proud of myself for getting it together to get out when the colors were nice. Gurmeet and I have had so much fun with the kids lately and are loving being parents (though he would never admit it!). Anyway, hope everyone is having a happy holiday season!

Jessica and Tyler's Winter Wedding

Jessica and Tyler braved the frigid weather last Saturday for their winter wedding! Jessica grew up in the valley, and over the years has had a great time sharing all her special spots with Tyler, who is a big fly fisherman, and loves it here. They now live in Boise, but were so excited to tie the knot here. After getting ready at separate condos, Tyler waited for Jessica on a chairlift at Dollar and they had the cutest moment when they saw each other for the first time. Although all of their friends thought they were crazy, they insisted on an outside ceremony at 8 p.m. on the porch at the Valley Club! Hand warmers were provided and everyone was excited enough to stay warm. The partying afterward warmed everyone up the rest of the way!

Liesl and Nowel's Wedding

I was honored to have the chance to photograph Liesl and Nowel's wedding. They are one of those couples that make me so happy to do what I do!

They had a beautiful wedding at Trail Creek this fall. They were awesome to work with because they are one of the most creative and stylish couples out there! I loved every little detail of Liesl's outfit and Nowel, who is a graphic designer, made their invitations. I also had a chance to do an engagement shoot with them this summer, which was one of the most fun shoots I've done in a long time. Nowel came up with the whole concept and images turned out so fun (I'll be sure to post some of those soon!)

It was awesome as usual to work with Amanda Seaward of Absolute Weddings and Nicole from Sun Valley. Flower Designs by Kathy put together some beautiful flowers for the event.

Norka & Dustin's Wedding

I had a crazy summer and an almost as busy fall! I managed to squeeze in all of my fall portraits and a bunch of high school seniors while the weather was nice and now that it’s getting a little colder, it’s time to get some editing done! I also managed to survive a whole month without Hailey (who edits for me and is awesome!), while she ran off on an exciting road trip for the month of October. Of course, that also means that I have been a little behind on the editing!

I finally got the chance earlier this week to sit down with Norka and Dustin in the studio to show them their wedding images for the first time! Norka’s uncle married the two of them at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Ketchum. Amanda Seaward planned the event and Tara Ooms did the flowers. The reception was held at the Elkhorn Restaurant. I really enjoyed getting to know Norka and Dustin, congratulations you two!

Just wanted to share this video about a project that I had the chance to work on with the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and students from the Sage School. I can't tell you how excited I was to have the opportunity to be part of such an amazing project and how inspiring it was to work with Harry and the kids at the Sage School. Caroline & Antonio's Sun Valley Wedding

Caroline & Antonio had one of the best weddings I have been to in a very long time! They are both amazing people—intelligent, gorgeous, gracious and hilarious! They both have great families and a fun group of friends. Midway through a formal first dance, they took everyone by surprise by busting into a choreographed Hip Hop routine! They also take the award for best first dance ever! Antonio's parents Rebecca and Tony hosted the party at their home out East Fork.

This was also the first time I had the chance to shoot with Hailey Tucker (who has been editing for me all summer), and she was awesome to work with! Wedding planner Amanda Seaward of Absolute Weddings made sure it all came together perfectly, Rasberry’s put together a delicious spread and Primavera did beautiful flowers. Lea Flocchini Morgan performed the ceremony, Mary Jones of the Chocolate Moose made the cake and Peggy Simpson did Caroline's makeup.

Congratulations Caroline & Antonio—you guys are awesome!

John & Nicki's Sawtooth Wedding

John and Nicki are one of those couples that are super sweet together and make you happy just to be around. They had a beautiful, intimate little ceremony overlooking a crazy storm in the Sawtooths. Everything about the day was so personal, which really made it special to be a part of. John and Nicki are big hikers and so we started the morning off with some pictures of the family as they returned from a hike out the Cabin Creek Trailhead. After getting ready at a friends’ cabin, Nicki and her sister rode a golf cart/four wheeler out to a meadow that she and John had picked out. There were a couple of raindrops as we left the cabin and some rumblings of thunder as the ceremony started. The storm seemed to just miss us, and as they said their vows, the sun shone through the clouds. It couldn’t have been a more perfect day! John and Nicki—you are truly a wonderful couple and I am so happy for you!

Ok so I am going to try to get better about updating my blog again regularly! It has just been such a busy summer, with so many portraits, weddings and events, that I have become a bit of a slacker on the blog. But that’s going to change! Because I’ve been having so much fun shooting lately and have lots of great images to share!

Here are some photos of Milana, who is a gorgeous Wood River senior who looks great everywhere! We did a little bit of studio and a little bit of outdoor in the same shoot and had a great time.

I can’t believe school is starting soon—just a couple more weeks! All you seniors out there— it’s time to start getting your senior portraits scheduled (call us at 788.2849). We have all sorts of cool new ideas and products for you this year!

Erik and Alida's Idaho Wedding

Alida and Erik are one of those couples that makes you love being a wedding photographer! They are so right for each other and both so fun to be around and their friends and family are the same way.

True to late June in Idaho (I know, I am super behind on the blog posts!), we had a crazy mixture of rain and sun, with a dusting of snow on the mountains from two days before. Alida and Erik took everything in stride and thanks to Amanda Seaward of Absolute Weddings and Erin, Don and the great staff at Galena Lodge, everything ran perfectly even as the plans for the day kept changing.

I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to be a part of Alida & Erik’s celebration—you guys are the best!

Just returned from a crazy week of Allen & Co. and am back in the studio working on getting caught up and shooting a ton!

This spring I had the opportunity to work with fabulous food photographer Paulette Phlipot and the great staff at Sun Valley Magazine on a cookbook for the Wine Auction’s 35^th Anniversary!

The cookbook showcases recipes by some of our amazing local chefs from Cristina’s, CKs, Ketchum Grill and Zou 75 (to name a few). It was so fun to work with all of them, photographing their delicious food! The cookbook also includes images that we’ve shot over the last several years at the wine auction, and information about entertaining, pairing the right wine with your menu etc. A release party for the cookbook is being held tonight at The Galleria in Ketchum. The cookbooks will be available for sale all around town and on the Center’s website. It’s been great working with the Sun Valley Center for the Arts on another project!

Summer is finally here and things have gotten super busy! We just finished up a Spring Portrait special, which was super fun. I got to spend all of last week in the park and down by the river photographing cute kids! Lots of processing for me and Hailey Tucker (who is working with me this summer and helping me out immensely) still to do, so we will get some of those images up on the blog soon. Wedding season is also in full swing and I have some great weddings that I will share in the next few weeks!

Yesterday I had the chance to do a portrait with Michaela, Hannah and Milana, who are all going to be seniors at Wood River this fall. We had a great time and I just wanted to share a couple of fun images real quick!

Congrats to Daniela, who is graduating from the Community School this weekend! It was so much fun to photograph Daniela, who just got back from a senior project in Europe, where she learned to bake in a small town bakery with her extended family-- I'm jealous! Anyway, Daniela was the last 2011 senior I photographed-- now it's time for all you upcoming seniors. We're already putting together our plans and packages for the class of 2012! Make sure to stop by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts gallery in Ketchum on Saturday night to get a portrait taken with your bike. I will be shooting portraits of anyone who stops by with a bike-- it should be lots of fun! The bike studio is part of a show the center is doing called Geared: The Culture of Bicycles. The Center always has the most interesting shows, so I'm sure it will be great! The portraits that we shoot are going to be displayed as part of the summer exhibit at the Center in Hailey. She’s an amazing girl—when we did these images, Kyla had just gotten back from Hawaii where she had been working on her senior project. The day after we shot these, she headed off to NYC to work on a movie set—pretty awesome!

I had the pleasure of photographing Carey & James’ growing family as part of our ‘Year in the Life’ program. It has been really fun, partially because Carey and I were pregnant at the same time and our little ones are the same age! The image above is the layout for a huge 40”x40” canvas collage that we put together. It was awesome to see Carey’s face when she came to pick it up a couple days ago!

Amanda & Joe's Wedding in Sun Valley, Idaho

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of meeting Amanda & Joe and photographing their wedding (well really they eloped!). The two of them live in Houston and had never been to Sun Valley. They are an awesome couple who had quite the adventure here in Idaho that weekend-- including getting rescued in a snow storm up north when they got lost on rented snowmobiles! I had such a great time getting to know them, photographing their ceremony and running around Sun Valley with them! Tara Ooms of Tara Bella Flowers did Amanda’s beautiful bouquet.

Upcoming class at Trail Creek Institute

I just wanted to let everyone know about a Digital Photography class I will be teaching at the Trail Creek Institute (through The Community School). It starts next Tuesday evening and will run every Tuesday (5:30-7:30) for 6 weeks. The cost is $120. Here’s the description:

This digital workshop will take you from the basics of exposure, manipulation of depth of field and shutter speed to the ultimate goal of creating compelling photographs with your digital camera. In this workshop, not only will we focus on the technical aspects of photography, we will also take the time to look more closely at our surroundings and to translate light into new and interesting images. This workshop will cover all the necessary ingredients for making great photographs – light, depth of field, shutter speed, metering, ISO, lens choice and composition – while guiding participants to strengthen their individual skills. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to control how motion and depth of field affect your photographs and will know how to use your camera in manual mode. In this workshop, Dev Khalsa aims to inform, inspire and challenge you to make beautiful and interesting images in your every day surroundings. This workshop is for beginning photographers as well as for those with more experience looking for a refresher and to strengthen their existing skills. The workshop will require each participant to have a digital SLR that can be used in manual mode.

Can't believe Reese is a year old!

Here are some images from a recent shoot with Reese—who is a year old! Reese just completed our ‘Year in the Life’ series, so I’ve had the opportunity to see her grow. She is super cute and I can’t wait to see her personality as it grows over the next couple of years. After Reese’s mom Regina left the studio, she sent the slideshow of these images out. A couple hours later, she sent me the sweetest email with comments from here friends—made me so happy-- I thought I’d share them here.

Oh my! Those pictures are the most adorable things I have ever seen! What a great job she did. How in the heck did you keep her so happy during the whole process? I want to have her do my pictures!!

Sara & Mike in Sun Valley

Here are a couple of images that I just did with Sara and Mike, who are live here in the Valley but got married in New Hampshire this summer. They really wanted to have some images done here, so we had a great time running around in the snow. We went snowshoeing, ice skating and roasted marshmallows! I’m back from a two-week vacation and super excited about upcoming weddings, portraits and photography classes! I love it here in the Valley but it was awesome to get out of town and spend some beach time with the family! (I’ll post some of those pictures when I get a free moment!)

Anyway, before I left I had a chance to shoot some really fun pictures with Marina at Red Door Design. Marina is my favorite Interior Designer and she recently moved her shop to Hailey, so if you haven’t been in there yet, go check it out (it’s at the intersection of Main and Bullion). Anyway, we just had some fun with her cute little boy Lennon and all the awesome furniture and accessories she has in her shop!

Working with the Sage School

I just wanted to share a couple images of the chaos in my studio last week when I had the high school kids from the Sage School working on a project for a fall gallery exhibit with the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. The exhibit will be about adolescence and the students are working on a series of portraits of themselves and their peers for the show. I had the chance to work with the students, to teach them some photography and help them execute their vision for their portraits. Anyway, it was tons of fun and I am looking forward to the next step in the project and will let you all know when the images are ready and you can come see them in the show! The family and I are off to Hawaii for a much needed vacation—yay! I’ll be in a couple of weeks, but I’ll have some access to email so feel free to drop me a line if you need something.

Things have been crazy lately! We had a great trip to Vegas—it was kind of madness like Vegas always is, but it was also great to go to the photo convention and see what is happening in the industry and get inspired by seeing all sorts of amazing photographers speak.

We’ve had a couple of busy weeks since we’ve been back and I’ve been guilty of slacking on blog posts because I have been shooting like crazy. I have been working with some great chefs on a cookbook for the Sun Valley Wine Auction, working with a amazing group of students from the Sage School in my studio on portraits of themselves for an exhibit in the fall and photographing lots of portraits and a fun winter wedding shoot!

I will post some of the photos from all of these shoots here soon, but for now I wanted to share a really cool link from a TED talk about light. Just got back from a crazy week of photo conventions in Vegas. We had a great time and met lots of great people but are super happy to be home! We love the fresh air and living in Sun Valley! Just wanted to share some engagement photos of Norka and Dustin, whose wedding I am so excited to be photographing in September. They are so cute together and we had a lot of fun shooting these. It was one of those crazy days when it was foggy in Hailey, snowing in mid-valley and bright blue skies in Ketchum so we lucked out!

So I have been thinking lately that I want to make my blog less formal and a little more personal, so I thought I would share some recent pictures of my family. It has been crazy getting adjusted to having two kids! Suddenly we have KIDS, not just one kid that we can drag around with us, doing everything we always did. Good thing kids are cute! Kyra lights up whenever you look at her. She’s three months old, has little thunder thighs and coos all the time. It’s so much fun to watch Asha be a big sister. She is very enthusiastic and though we often come into the room to find her doing something very dangerous with Kyra (like holding her in her arms while jumping up and down), she also does really cute things, like “reading” stories to Kyra. Gurmeet and I are taking the kids to Vegas for a photography convention next week (we’ll be there for a whole week, but luckily will have some help from my sister Tasha), so we’ll let you know how that goes!

That first picture is Kyra in a basket in our living room—I’m trying to make sure that I don’t neglect Kyra when it comes to documenting her different stages—seeing as I was so good with Asha when she was little! Anyway, I think Asha was feeling a little neglected, so here they are hanging out in the basket together.

Here is little Reese with her parents in the studio over Christmas-- she is getting cuter and cuter. Having a new baby has reminded me how fast kids grow—I can’t believe Kyra is 11 weeks old already! In 2010 I started a ‘year in the life’ baby plan where I do three shoots over the course of a baby’s first year. I’ve got a bunch of families taking advantage of it and it has been so fun to see the kids grow!

Sweet Lil' Campbell!

Just had a photo session with Campbell who is one sweet little girl! Her super mom Annie (Ketchum firefighter and SV snow patrol - wow!) referred to her as little Cindy Lou Who in this hat... I just thought it was adorable!

Campbell, who was one of Larsen Petersen's 5B Doula Babies just turned 5 months. I've been working with Larsen over the last several months and will have to post some of the other 5B Doula babies that have been in my studio!

Katie and Todd are a super fun couple from Chicago - Katie, who grew up in Idaho, lit up the day with her smile! I had such a great time capturing them on their wedding day. She took 'wear something blue to such a fun level' - your shoes were great!

As many of you know by now (it would have been hard to miss if you saw me around town this summer), I’m pregnant and getting ready to have a baby in the next week or two! This fun preggo image of me was taken by a good photographer friend of mine named Charles West, who was visiting from Salt Lake last week. Our daughter Asha is three years old and raising her so far has been one of the most amazing things we have ever done! Hopefully I will be as good about taking pictures of our next little one! In the spirit of newborns, we just finished filling the walls of Dr. Rodriguez’s office with images of cute local babies. I will probably be out of the office for a couple of weeks (back some time around the middle of November), but thanks to my amazing studio manager Amy, phones will be answered, emails will be returned and things should run pretty much as normal while I am gone.

Graduation at UW!

Gurmeet, Asha and I headed to the Puget Sound last week for graduation at the University of Washington. Gurmeet's cousin, Lela, graduated with a degree Latin American studies. Seattle is so beautiful when the sun shines!! We had great weather for our trip.

We shot Fynn's Senior Portraits with his pride and joy - it's amazing how much time and energy he has put into this car. It was really fun working with Fynn and we wish him luck with his Senior project - rebuilding the engine on an old Audi!

Congrats to Margot & Carter who just had a cute little baby boy named Angus Robert Ramsay! These pictures were taken right before they entered the world of parenthood. We are so excited for them and wish them lots of love in these first few weeks of feeding, diapers and spit up! We had a great time wrapping Margot’s belly in textured fabric during this shoot. Now I can’t wait to photograph little Angus!

I had such a great time working with Chloe Jory on her senior portraits. I love her gorgeous green eyes, and she has such great style! Every time I photograph another high school senior, I remember why they are so much fun to work with—they are always willing to try anything and often come to me with great portrait ideas of their own!

I’ve been a bad blogger lately! I’ve been busy with all sorts of things (mostly a bunch of commercial work, senior portraits and maternity shoots), but am still getting the hang of getting stuff up on the blog regularly! I just wanted to thank everyone that attended my workshop this weekend! I love teaching and always learn so much from the participants! The class was a three-day digital workshop through the Sun Valley Center. We had a full class and the group had a really great dynamic. The workshop focused on learning digital photography by going back to basics, so we concentrated on motion, depth of field, lighting and composition. Here are a couple of images taken by Stacie Brew of the participants shooting portraits in my studio. I’m sure we’ll do another workshop next spring, but in the mean time, if you are interested in learning how to use that new digital camera, let me know!

Mexico Vacation!

Sorry to have been neglecting the blog, but we just got back from a much needed vacation to Mexico, with our friends Piers, Kirsten and their little ones Charlie and Olivia! It was great to soak in some sun and watch the kids play on the beach. My daughter Asha and her friend Charlie had tons of fun together swimming, running and playing, which meant we had a chance to really relax!

Family Day at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts

Had so much fun at the family at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts this weekend! My mother in law was in town and dressed all the girls in saris, while Gurmeet tied turbans on the boys. Then all the kids did Indian arts and crafts and worked on writing their names in Punjabi. Poor Sarah Kolash had to learn Punjabi in 15 minutes! Anyway, here are some images of my little Asha and her cousin Simi from the event. There will be lots more pictures up on the Center’s website soon!

Erin and Ben, who are planning a fun wedding up at Galena Lodge this summer, are such a cute couple! We had fun running around Sun Valley a couple weeks ago and even got some sledding in-- though it was before we got all this powder, so it was a little brutal!

I took the pictures above (which are showing at the Green Antelope Gallery in Bellevue) with an old Polaroid camera called an SX-70 (shown above the set of three images), where you can manipulate the picture after it comes out of the camera. The emulsion is still soft and you can move it around, so it that it looks almost like a painting. They are awesome and something I love to do! Unfortunately, Polaroid went out of business last year and you can’t get the film anymore, but I heard that a group of people might buy one of the Polaroid factories and start production on SX-70 film again. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

Here are some recent images from the Sun Valley Center's Henna Workshop for teenagers. They have a great exhibit about Indian Art right now and are doing all sorts of great events on the subject, including a cooking class with Gay Odmark last night and a showing of a Bollywood movie at the Liberty on Thursday. If you haven't seen a Bollywood movie yet, you should definitely go-- they are tons of fun and full of awesome over-dramatic song and dance scenes! Also, if you have kids, my mother in law is going to be here doing a really fun family day at the Center in Ketchum this Saturday, so come check it out!

I just wanted to share a story that I worked on with Laurie Sammis about Amanda Walton. It is the winter issue of Sun Valley Magazine. Amanda is an amazing athlete who was in a horrible car accident in 2000 that left her with a traumatic brain injury. Despite everything, Amanda is now training to swim competitively.
