Planning Your Newborn Session
With everything you have going on before welcoming a baby into your lives, scheduling a newborn session is sometimes the last thing on your mind. But if you do have a chance to think about it ahead of time, it can be incredibly helpful to get your session on the calendar early.
When is the ideal time for a newborn session?
The ideal time for newborn photos is within the first 10–14 days after birth. During this window, babies tend to sleep deeply, are at their tiniest, and still have that sweet, curled-up newborn look.
Because we love for your baby to be asleep for most of the session, those first couple of weeks are usually best. Of course, babies arrive on their own schedule, so we typically pencil you in based on your due date and then adjust the date and time once your baby arrives.
And if you miss that two-week window for any reason — don’t worry at all. We photograph babies of all ages, and beautiful images can be created whenever your little one is still small.
What location is best?
The best location really depends on the look and feel you love most.
Studio sessions are perfect if you want a classic, simple, or minimalist look — especially if you love black and white images.
Outdoor sessions can be beautiful when the weather is warm, whether by the river or under a shady tree in the park.
In-home sessions are ideal if you want to capture your life just as it is right now — on your bed, in the nursery, on the sofa, or even in your yard.
There are so many wonderful options, and we’re always happy to help you decide. We also have plenty of examples from different types of sessions that we can go over together during your pre-session consultation.
What should I bring?
Please bring: a pacifier (if you use one) and diapers and wipes.
You don’t need to worry too much about baby outfits. Simple clothing that’s easy to get on and off — like plain onesies that snap or tie — works best. We love keeping things neutral with soft colors and textures.
Our studio is stocked with cozy blankets, baskets, and sweet little hats. That said, you’re always welcome to bring meaningful items, such as a blanket knitted by a grandparent or a special hat you love. Personal touches make your images even more special.
If you’d like help deciding what to bring, just let us know!
Let’s meet ahead of time
Whenever possible, we love meeting with you in the studio before your session. This gives us a chance to get to know your family, hear about what makes you unique, and start brainstorming ideas together.
It’s also a wonderful time to answer questions and help you feel completely prepared and relaxed going into your session.
How will you use your images?
Your pre-session is a great time to explore our print and display options, so you can start thinking about how you’d like to enjoy your images once they’re ready. If you already know you’d like an album, birth announcements, or wall art, please tell us ahead of time. Knowing how you plan to use your images helps us photograph your session with those goals in mind.
A few other things…
What should the adults wear?
Neutral clothing works best so the focus stays on your baby. Soft earth tones, black, and simple textures photograph beautifully. Try to avoid bold patterns, stripes, or plaid. Wear something comfortable — and feel free to bring an extra change of clothes, just in case.
Accidents happen!
Please don’t be embarrassed if your baby has an accident on any of our blankets or props. Everything can be washed — and this is completely normal when working with newborns.
Empty or full tummy?
A full baby is usually a happy baby. Feed your little one as close to the session start time as possible, and be sure to burp them well. We’re always happy to pause for feeding breaks during the session.
